Kelly's 1974 MG Midget

It all began in 1992 when I hired a young man (Kirk) to do some mechanical work on an old Dodge that I had bought for an investment. As Kirk was working, he mentioned that he would like to have my Dodge to turn into a muscle car. I told him if he had another car to trade I might consider it. He answered I have an MG. I could not believe what he just said. My eyes lit up and I was anxious to find out more about his car. The fact is, I had always enjoyed my first MG back in 1967, even though it gave me a lot of problems, I still missed it. Now I'm thinking I may be able to get another one.

A few days later I went to see the MG. It was a Midget up on blocks in an old barn in the process of being worked on. Kirk informed me it was in running condition and that he had bought a carpet kit to install. The car was an awful faded yellow with black pin stripes along the sides, a few minor dings and a little rust at the rocker panels. The worst was the over size tires he put on it ( because he was hot roddin' through the woods with it!) but he still had the original wheels. I was so excited that it was a Midget with a 1275cc, and I wanted it.

Since my swap in getting the Midget there have been a lot of changes. A complete overhaul was done, front end work, all the shocks were replaced and a sway bar installed to name a few. On the cosmetics, the car had been repainted twice (due to being rear ended twice). I've also had to replace the right rear finder, deck lid, and luggage rack because of the accidents. I had the car painted Dodge Viper Yellow. The idea behind that was so people would SEE that bright color….well that was the idea of it. I've also installed a dash cover, a new custom console/mini martini bar with blue light effects, and a top of the line Pioneer CD player. The only thing I would like to do is to have the seats re-done in leather and new door panels and carpet.

My little Midget has come a long way since I have owned it. It has been a very reliable little car. I used to commute to work over 100 miles daily in it. Now it's just my fun car that is a pleasure to drive and show in local car shows.
